The Use of Wall Chart in English Teaching


CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION



This chapter orderly presents background of the study, statement of the

problem, objective of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation of

the study, definition of key terms, and systematical discussion.



A. Background of the Study


Nowadays, mastering other languages, especially International

languages, is very important since language is a means of communication

among individuals.Firstly, the process of globalization and

modernization will actually bring people to live together in a global life in

the world. The need of interaction with people in a global society who

have different backgrounds, languages, and cultures cannot be avoided.

Thus, an international language functions as the main means used by

people to interact with each other and build a relationship in their

environment, including English. It is worthwhile to learn and to use it as a

device to live together.

Moreover, English, one of the international languages, is used by

most of the countries over the world.2 It is used in many aspects of life

such as science, technology, business, commerce, politics, education,

etc. Crystal also states that English is used as a medium of transferring

knowledge in line with the development of science and technology.3 In

addition, mastering English becomes the important requirement in

business, which has to be fulfilled in order to get a job. Therefore, the

department of national education has considered that English is taught

not only in junior and senior level but also in elementary level, as a

local content teaching. It gives the elementary students an opportunity

to get and develop their English ability. Therefore, they can anticipate

the environmental condition, which has been influenced by the

development of science, technology, culture, and art.


Based on the Curriculum Based Competence, the purpose of

learning English is to improve the students’ com munication ability in

spoken and written form (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).

Students are expected to be able to communicate and express in

English to the certain literacy level. Wells states that the literacy level

consists of performative, functional, informational, and epistemic. In the performative level, students are symbol to master reading, writing,

listening, and speaking skill. In functional level, students use language

to fulfill the daily life, for example reading the newspaper, manual, or

direction. In the informational level, students are able to access the

knowledge and language skill, and in the epistemic level, students are

able to express knowledge. 4


The students have to be able to communicate and express in

English to the certain literacy. The functional level is the target

language of junior high school. Therefore, they will be able to

communicate written and oral to solve the problem. Students are

expected to be able to understand the material that is given by the

teacher. In fact, most students have less attention and motivation.

Therefore, it becomes the challenge for teachers to attract them.


The fact shows that teaching English is not easy. Teaching

English becomes very difficult because the students of junior high

school are teenagers. They have less motivation in learning. Puchta

and Schartz stated that, teenagers are often much less motivated to

learn.5 After all the goals and ends, seem much more distant.

Case Study of CTL Approach Implementation for the English Teaching



This research aimed to find the improvement of students’ writing skill using Sequence Pictures. The researcher used A Classroom Action Research (CAR). The researcher conducted two cycles, where each cycle consisted of three meetings. This classroom action research was done at VII.A class of MTs. Aisyiyah Sungguminasa.
The researcher used two instruments namely: written test and observation checklist. From the written test, the researcher found that most of the students were very difficult in writing especially here in writing procedure text. Students were very hard for arranging the steps in procedure text because they lost their idea and sometimes they did not know what they want to write in the next step. Therefore, the researcher conducted this research to solve those problems. Here, the researcher trying to use the Sequence Picture in writing procedure text in the way to change the students’writing skill in procedure text. With using pictures, it can stimulate the students to write what they want to write in every step.
After several meetings, this research found out that the use of Sequence Picture is significantly effective to improve the students’ writing skill especially in writing procedure text. The result of the research was the mean score obtained by the students through pre test, test of cycle 1 and second cycle. Where the students’ mean score in writing procedure text in the second cycle was greater than in the first cycle and in pre-test (83.78 > 78.90 > 67.31). It means that this is a significant difference between the result of the students in pre test, first cycle and second cycle.
The students have positive attitude toward learning using sequence pictures. It is indicated by the result of the questionnaires and observation checklist. In observation checklist, there is improvement of the students’ participation from the first cycle to the second cycle, where in the first cycle, the mean score of students’ participation was 63.79% becomes 76.82% in the second cycle. It means that the students’ participation got 13.03% progress. And in questionnaire, most of students have positive attitude in learning process.

INTRODUCTION
A.     Background
       Writing is one of the language skills that play an important role in human communication. The most important of writing is coming to be more and more recognized. It is the written mark that links with the outside world is formed.
There is no doubt that English writing is important as the other three-language skills. The ability to write is frequently demanded in many occasions in our life.  For many reasons writing skill is crucial to most people. In relation about that, Adelstein and Vipal as cited in Supriadi (2008) express that in all subjects in our life or in all profession, the ability to write or express oneself clearly is essential basic for success. Writing is crucial mean of human communication. It is used to communicate with other people in society and to express our feeling and opinions. Writing means of both communication and self expression.
Mansi (2012) says that in the competence based curriculum, the students are expected to be able to communicate. The ability to communicate is the ability to understand and produce discourse of which it can be realized in four language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Moreover those four skills should be applied in real life. Hence, English subject needs to develop those skills. In order that, the students are able to communicate and make discourse in English language in certain literacy level.

An Analysis of grammatical Errors in Using Adjective Clauses 

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION




A Background of the Study

English, as an international language, is very important for Indonesian people.It is the reason that English is the first foreign languagewhich is taught as a compulsory subject in both junior high school and senior high school. But mastering English as foreign language is not an easy job. When people learn a foreign language, they often face interferences, where they apply their mother tongue or first structure to the foreignlanguage structure which is differentfrom their native language. Indonesian students learn English as the first foreign language. Because English is a new language, thus, they get some difficulties and also need much time to learn.
The  objective  of  teaching  and  learning  English  is  to  develop  four language skills: listening, speaking, readingand writing. One of the elements that aretaught to supportthe four language skills is grammar. In understanding grammar, teachers recently do not teach grammar specifically and separately. They combine it with differentlanguage skills communicatively. This makes the students often confuse in understanding grammatical rules.
An adjective clause as part of a complex sentence is one of topics which aretaught in Senior High School.According to Betty Scrhampfer Azar, “an
adjective  clause  is  a  dependent  clause  that  modifies  a  noun.  It  describes,


identifies, or gives further information about a noun. An adjective clause is also called a relative clause.”Raymond Murphy says that a relative clause tells the readers what the speaker means about person or thing (or what kind of person or thing).2
The difficulties of the studentsin learning adjective clause sometimes bringerrors. Errors indicatethat the learners construct their own rules on the basis of input data which is differentfrom the target language.As Julian Edge states in Jeremy Harmer’s book, errors cannot correct themselves, so they need explanation about the reasons they happen.3
In language learning,the study of learner’s errors is needed becausethe

result of the study gives some contributions on attempts to deal with the students’ difficulties. The teacher can infer the nature of the students’ knowledge and find what they still have to learn by analyzing the students’ errors. Moreover, the result of the study focusing on students’ errors can be used as a means to measure whether the studentshave mastered the language taught by the teacher or not. It is also as a means to measure the teacher’s success in teaching a language.
Based on the explanation above, the writer is interested in conducting a research about an analysisof grammatical errors in adjectiveclauses.

INTRODUCTION

This chapter provides the basic idea related to the study. It presents the background of the study, statement of the problems, objectives of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and the definition of key terms.
A.     Background of the Study

Learning English is needed since it is a global language used in both pleasure and business, such as wider network of relationship, ease to travel to any English speaking country without translator and more job opportunities opened.
In English, there are four skills that must be mastered well: reading and listening as receptive skills, speaking and writing as productiveskills.1 Receptive skill means comprehending the meaning of the word in the target languageand relating them to the native language. Meanwhile,in mastering productiveskill, students are expected to put their idea in to conversation or written form.However, in our daily lives, most of us speak more than write. Speaking is fundamental to human communication. It can be seen by comparing the different conversation we have done in one day with how much written communication we do in one day. In speaking, some teachers get difficulties in choosing right instructional material. Instructionalmaterial is the kind of materialthat used process in the classroom. It is written or non written materials.Using instructional material there are so many purposes, the instructional material provides the material that students needed, helps the students to get the alternative textbook, eases the teacher in learning process, and makes the effective communication in learning process.On the other hand, without knowingabout the benefit,sometimes teacher makes a mistake in choosing the instructional material. It is why they get difficulties in using instructional material in the learning process. Instructional material is an important part in learningprocess. The good materialwill give the deeply understanding to the student and catch their interest in learning process. Most of the researchers always observe about the teaching method and ignore the important of the instructional material. Although,without the right instructional material, however the method it will be useless. The good material will guide the student to master the language well. It is why the instructional materialis important in learning process.
